A Smarter Way to Retire: Episode 1 Recap

Welcome to the very first episode of the A Smarter Way to Retire podcast! I’m Tony Leonardi, Certified Financial Planner, Chartered Retirement Planning Counselor, and founder of Leonardi Family WealthCare. With over 30 years in the financial services industry, I’m excited to guide you toward a confident financial future.

Introducing My New Book

I’m thrilled to announce the upcoming release of my book, A Smarter Way to Retire: 10 Steps Towards a Confident Financial Future. This book is a culmination of decades of experience and is designed to be your comprehensive guide through the 10-step financial planning process I’ve developed to help you achieve your retirement goals with confidence.

Stock Picking vs. Financial Planning

To illustrate the importance of financial planning over stock picking, I shared a fascinating case study from Barron’s Magazine. Every year, Barron’s assembles top financial analysts to predict stock market winners. In 2024, Abby Cohen, a well-respected Wall Street economist, picked 10 stocks. At year-end, her selections underperformed the S&P 500 by 44%. This highlights a critical lesson: Stock picking does not equal financial planning. Instead of chasing stock tips, this podcast will focus on tried-and-true financial planning principles that withstand market fluctuations.

The Power of a Financial Model

A central theme in both the book and podcast is the importance of having a real-time financial model—think of it as your financial GPS. It serves two purposes:

  1. Illustrates where you are currently – Your assets, liabilities, income, expenses, and net worth.
  2. Guides your decisions – Helps you test different strategies and make adjustments to stay on track.

As Lao Tzu famously said, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” The first step in financial planning is knowing where you stand.

What to Expect from This Podcast

Each episode will break down one of the 10 steps in my book, helping you build your personal financial model piece by piece. Whether you’re preparing for retirement or are already retired, this process will empower you to make informed and confident financial decisions.

We’ll cover key topics such as:

  • Setting goals for retirement
  • Creating a sustainable income plan
  • Planning for healthcare costs
  • Leaving a legacy
  • Adapting to economic and tax law changes

The first 12 episodes will focus on the 10-step retirement planning process, and after that, I’ll dive into timely topics like market trends, estate planning, and tax strategies. I’ll also invite guest experts—money managers, attorneys, and specialists in investment vehicles—to bring diverse perspectives to the conversation.

A Collaborative Approach to Financial Planning

My role as a financial planner is to partner with you in building a financial plan tailored to your unique needs. This isn’t just about numbers—it’s about aligning your financial strategy with your values and priorities.

I believe that financial planning is a hands-on process. While I do the heavy lifting, you need to be actively engaged. It reminds me of when I rebuilt a rusted-out 1967 Mustang convertible as a young man. By taking it apart and rebuilding it, I understood every bolt and screw, and I could fix any issue that arose. The same principle applies to your financial plan—the more involved you are, the more confident and prepared you’ll be for the road ahead.

Looking Ahead

I hope these foundational episodes will serve as a timeless resource for you. While financial markets fluctuate, solid financial planning principles remain unchanged.

I’m excited to take this journey with you! Tune in next week as we discuss Step 1: Getting Organized, where we’ll tackle how to move from scattered paperwork to a structured financial plan.

Until next time, stay focused, stay informed, and remember—a smarter way to retire starts with a smarter way to plan!
